H1N1 Flu Update: 10/26/09
Q: What happens if a case of H1N1 flu is confirmed at the school?
A: The Santa Clara County Health Department recommends that schools treat cases of H1N1 (“swine”) Flu as we would other types of flu. This flu is everywhere in the community, which means one may catch it from anywhere in the community.
CUSD Protocol:
1. When reporting a student’s absence, we ask parents to tell us the symptoms the child has.
2. If student absences due to flu-like symptoms exceed 20 percent in a grade level or classroom, the District’s Health Services staff notifies the County Health Department. If the County Health Department officials determine that further action is needed, they will let the District Superintendent know and the District will follow their instructions. If parents need to be notified, we will use existing methods of notification, including phone, email, etc.
Most people who get sick with flu get better without any medical attention. This has been true for the H1N1 flu virus. Most people who have been sick with the H1N1 flu have been taken care of at home and have fully recovered. People who have health problems are at higher risk for more severe illness, as are people with weakened immune systems.
If you have additional questions about how to protect your family from the flu—H1N1 or others—please contact your medical provider or visit the County Health Department at www.sccgov.org/portal/site/phd <http://www.sccgov.org/portal/site/phd> .
If you don’t have health coverage for your children or yourself, please call the Health Trust for assistance in applying for Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, Healthy Kids or Kaiser Child Health Plan insurance programs. Phone: 408-961-9893.
