I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to take part in our English Learners Advisory Committee (ELAC). Below are the answers to commonly asked questions.
What is ELAC?
*An English Learners Advisory Committee is intended for parents/guardians of English Learners to advise the principal and the school staff on programs and services for English Learners.
*ELAC is required at every school that has more than twenty identified English Learners, regardless of the types of programs offered at the school.
What are the required ELAC duties?
The ELAC must effectively advise on at least the following.
- School Plan/policies/programs for English Learners
- Development of the school’s needs assessment (on any issues, not limited to those pertaining exclusively to English Learners)
- School’s annual language census (R-30)
- Recommends actions to support regular school attendance
Who forms ELAC?
ELAC is formed by ELAC Officers, staff, and parents of English Learners.
What are ELAC Officers?
CUSD recommends that each ELAC has a president, vice-president, secretary and a DELAC representative.
- Officers help develop agendas
- President and vice president help conduct meetings
- Secretary takes meeting notes
- DELAC representative attends DELAC meetings and takes and brings information between the ELAC and the DELAC on behalf of the ELAC members
How are ELAC Officers chosen?
ELAC Officers are chosen by conducting an Election.
- Elections must be for all members, not just the officers
- Elections are done by ballots
- All parents of English Learners are given the opportunity to participate in the election process
- Parent of English Learners elect the parent members of the ELAC
If you would like to run for an Officer Position or have any questions in regards to ELAC, please contact Mariza Ramans at (408) 556-0360. Our first meeting will be on Thursday, October 1, at 8:30 AM in the staff lounge. Elections will be held at that time.
Thank you,
